Mersey Maritime Group is continuing its mission to help regional SMEs drive growth after recruiting former England rugby legend turned business performance guru Rory Underwood to deliver a motivational workshop.

The event saw select marine related firms from the Wirral and Liverpool discussing ways to improve business management and team performance.

Mersey Maritime commercial director Chris Shirling-Rooke arranged the visit as part of the trade group’s Maritime Sector Development Programme.

He said they were delighted to work alongside England’s leading try scorer who for the past 15 years has led a successful career with team development consultancy Wingman.

“It was terrific to welcome Rory to our head office in Birkenhead where he delivered a thought provoking, absorbing and interactive session,” he said. “Rory has incredible experience having performed at the highest level of international sport and also as an RAF pilot. He has a deep understanding of the mechanics of successful team work. He also has a focused, strategic and detailed approach to management from his fast jet flying career in the forces. This combined with more than 15 years as a business consultant has given him a great depth of knowledge in how to improve businesses and performance. The firms which attended the session were able to drill into this knowledge gaining first class advice and ideas on how they can grow their own businesses.”

“Rory touched on how organisations striving to succeed can become fixated on quick results and end up creating a short-term performance culture,” said Mr Shirling-Rooke. “He explained how long term relationships and strong teams built over time are a key to success.”

Mr Shirling-Rooke said Mersey Maritime’s Sector Development Programme offers a broad range of support in areas including business planning, marketing, skills brokerage and supply chains.

“We were able to offer this workshop free of charge to our members through our development programme which is supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF),” he said. “We are passionate about providing high level support to the region’s maritime SMEs. This workshop was just one of a number of exciting initiatives being delivered by Mersey Maritime. Other events to look out for include our “On the road” business forums. These see us visiting all six boroughs in the Liverpool City Region to broaden our impact and spark new business relationships. It will allow us to open discussion on how the region’s SMEs can best benefit from major developments on the horizon including the International Festival for Business (IFB 2014) and the £1.8billion SuperPort project.”
