A rising star of Oldham women’s junior golf has found a novel way to improve her game at Oasis Academy Oldham.
Carina-May Teirney, left, who is in year 8 at the Oldham school, is practising her bunker shots from the school’s long jump pit as she dedicates her free time to climbing the ranks and winning tournaments.
She is the also using the academy’s first class gym facilities to work on her overall fitness and strength.
Carina-May has trained with the Lancashire Ladies Golf Association (LLGA) and received coaching from professional Steve Ingram at Bowlee Park driving range, in Middleton.
She won at Dean Wood Golf Club, in Skelmersdale, to qualify for the Ormskirk LLGA ‘Derby Day’ and won events at Clitheroe and Hurlston Hall, in Ormskirk. Carina-May also slashed her handicap from 41 to 23 during her 2013 season.
To help the 13-year-old achieve her goal of becoming a top junior player, Oasis Academy Oldham has provided her with free evening access to the school’s Oasis Hub sports facilities which opened in 2012.
Principal David Hayes said he is proud of Carina-May’s achievements and pleased the school can fuel her ambition with its state-of-the-art facilities.
“Carina-May is a real talent and is showing all the signs of becoming a top, top player,” he said.
“Last year, she took on some the best juniors and adult players across the North West and won tournaments against older players. While the long jump pit is probably not the first thing one would associate with golf training, it is proving a brilliant place to perfect her bunker shots.
“Carina is also making use of our gym and other sports facilities to work on her strength and fitness. We wish her all the luck in the world and will continue to support her in any way we can.”
Carina-May’s support from the LLGA is helping to pay her fees for coaching and sessions at the driving range as a member of the ‘Eagle 4′ squad.
Her father Colin said she is targeting a handicap of 12 by the end of 2014 and was expecting to travel extensively for tournaments this year.
“Carina had a brilliant 2013 and we are all expecting it to be an even better 12 months this year,” he said.
“She has mainly played in competitions across Greater Manchester and Lancashire but we are due to travel as far as Scotland later this year for an event.
“We can’t thank Oasis Academy Oldham and the Lancashire Ladies’ Golf Association enough for their support. The sports facilities are excellent at Oasis Academy and are proving the perfect place for Carina-May to work on her all-round game.”
