Oasis Academy Oldham secures record breaking GCSE results
Students and staff at Oasis Academy Oldham are celebrating today after receiving the best results in the school’s history.
Oasis Academy Oldham principal David Hayes said today’s exam results marked a significant shift in the school’s progression after recording sharp increases on last year figures.
“We are delighted with this set of GCSE results which show major improvements,” he said. “I am extremely proud of our students who have secured the best ever outcomes for themselves in the Academy’s history. I would like to pay tribute to all Year 11 students and to our team of dedicated staff who are today being rewarded for their effort. These results are the culmination of high expectations, sheer hard work, determination and a relentless focus on every child achieving their full potential. The number of students achieving at least five A*-C grades including English and Maths has risen to 50pc, up 17pc on last year’s figures. Similarly, the percentage of pupils achieving five or more A*-C grades has catapulted by 18pc to a total figure of 85pc.”
Oasis Academy Oldham is now in its fourth year after national academy chain Oasis Community Learning brought together South Chadderton and Kaskenmoor Schools in September 2010. Mr Hayes, was appointed principal just over a year ago, after being selected for the Future Leader Trust’s Headship programme in 2009.
He said the Academy has succeeded by building on the early foundations and impact of the 2010 conversion to Oasis. The latest exam success follows two positive Ofsted reports documenting consistent improvements to teaching, learning, behaviour and performance.
“Being part of the Oasis family of academies and support from the Future Leaders Trust, we have been able to create an ethos built on values, achievement and aspiration, which has informed our vigorous values driven campaign for wide scale improvements. Since moving to the new £30m purpose built site in Hollinwood in September last year we have continued to drive positive momentum. Our staff and students are determined to maintain this upward trajectory and make Oasis Academy Oldham an outstanding place for learning. This is an exciting chapter in the history of Oasis Academy Oldham and today’s exam results illustrate our commitment to driving up all round educational standards for our community.”

Leah Glendenning
Leah has battled huge adversity and shown great determination to secure eight A*-C grades including English and maths. She missed close to 10 months of study during Year 10 and 11 suffering with Osgood-Schlatter disease causing extreme pain and complications in the hip joints. The courageous 16-year-old underwent a total of five operations during her GCSE years. She is now planning to advance her studies at Oldham Sixth Form College with Health, Social Care, English Language and Photography. “It has been a challenging last couple of years, but I’m so please to have got these results,” she said. “My studies have been quite disrupted and I’ve been in and out of school. But my teachers have been great and they have helped me to catch up. I’m really happy because I now have the results I need to study my favourite subjects at sixth form college.”
Roni Spencer
Roni joined Oasis Academy Oldham in March 2011 as a Year 9 student. She joined from another school where she was at risk of permanent exclusion due to behavioural and attendance issues. Since her arrival she committed herself to improving her all round performance and is today celebrating 8 *A-C grades. Roni also secured a 98pc attendance record in her final year of GCSE studies. She further excelled on the Academy’s Level 3 Health and Social Care course achieving a distinction plus grade, equivalent to an A*. Roni now plans to study Nursing, Health and Social Care. “I’ve really enjoyed being at Oasis Academy Oldham,” she said. “The teachers have brought the best out in me and I’ve learnt how to enjoy studying. I’ve also found subjects I’m really interested in.”
Shamil Abakorov
16-year-old Shamil spoke no English when he arrived in the UK in August 2011 after emigrating with his family from Russia. He joined Oasis Academy Oldham in November 2011. In the last two years he has shown dedication and commitment to his studies to record seven A*-C GCSE grades. Shamil is now planning to study IT networking at Oldham College. “I am really happy with the results,” he said. “I have put in a great deal of hard work to achieve these results. My teachers have been a great support and gave me real confidence.”
