One of Merseyside’s largest independent chartered accountants is backing a new project to provide expert help for start-up businesses.
Mitchell Charlesworth is supporting the SparkUp programme backed by Liverpool and Sefton Chamber of Commerce to create 500 new businesses in five years. Other supporters include NatWest, University of Liverpool, national PR agency The BIG Partnership, Aspire Creative Enterprises and Glow New Media.
Mitchell Charlesworth specialises in helping new businesses across many sectors and its expert staff will give their advice free to new entrepreneurs selected for SparkUp. It has offices in Liverpool, Warrington and Widnes.
Mitchell Charlesworth associate and start-up expert Paul Durrance said: “Liverpool and the Merseyside region are buzzing with great ideas and exciting businesses. But people with great ideas still need expert help to refine their services or products, along with independent, trustworthy advice on other aspects of business, from planning and marketing, to accounts and tax. That’s where our staff expertise is invaluable.
“We have offices across the region along with terrific business contacts in many sectors. We offer great support to new businesses and are delighted to support new talent from this region through SparkUp.”
SparkUp aims to create 500 “super businesses” across Merseyside. Overseen by Liverpool and Sefton Chamber of Commerce, the programme offers free expert mentoring, training, office space and IT facilities to new businesses across the region.
It is funded by the private sector and modelled on successful business development projects in Scotland and the United States. The Scottish scheme, called ESpark, has been hailed a great success with support for new businesses in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Ayrshire.
The US programme, based in Boston, is called MassChallenge and was launched in 2010. So far it has supported 360 start-ups and businesses which have taken part are estimated to have created almost 3,000 jobs, generated $95million in revenue and raised $360m in funding.
Merseyside’s SparkUp programme has initially helped a small number of new businesses. Now many more start-ups are ready to join and hundreds of people have enquired about it, organisers say. Its pilot programme will conclude this summer at Liverpool’s International Festival for Business.
Spark Up was created by chief executive of Liverpool and Sefton Chamber of Commerce, Jenny Stewart, and is being run by programme director, Dr Nick Owen MBE, an experi-enced social entrepreneur. For details see sparkup.org.uk
