Birkenhead based Peter D Welch Electrical Contractors Ltd (PDW) will be delivering a complete electrical engineering package for a new state-of-the-art care home.

The electrical contractor is working on the next phase of a ten-year project to upgrade residential facilities at Raby Hall, in Bromborough, Wirral.

Plans designed by architect Craig Barron of Barron Design involve the construction of a new high-tech building and a major upgrade to current facilities. The redevelopment will provide a lifelong home for people with autism, severe communication skills and sensory difficulties.

The project is being led by Wirral Autistic Society (WAS) which is looking to raise £935,000 through its Lifetime Appeal to complete the build.

PDW, which is part of the SeaKing Electrical Group, will play an instrumental role delivering a number of key features – including a special mood lighting scheme – to create a calm and nurturing environment.

Working alongside the client’s consultants and as part of the project design team, their broader work involves the design and build of a full electrical system. This includes mains & sub-mains distribution, general power, lighting, emergency lighting, fire alarm, data, telephone and security systems.

PDW operations director Andrew Butler said the project was secured through main contractor Mellwood Construction Ltd.

“Phase one involves the construction of a new building alongside Raby Hall,” he said. “We will be responsible for delivering the entire electrical infrastructure for this new development.

“Special features include a mood lighting scheme with colour-changing LED technology. This ultra modern lighting can create a soothing and peaceful atmosphere, as well as vibrant and uplifting displays. It further brings cost, energy saving and environmental benefits by improving light output and efficiency.

“This is a wonderfully rewarding project for PDW to be involved with,” said Mr Butler. “We know that for people with autism the environment in which they live can have a profound impact on their health and well-being. We are delighted to be able to offer our services to help improve their quality of life.”

Steve Nunwick, Director of Estates & Facilities at Wirral Autistic Society, said: “We are delighted to be working with local contractor, PDW, to deliver a key phase in our Raby site redevelopment. Our aim is to upgrade our residential facilities from good to great and thereby deliver an enhanced experience to our service users.”

The Raby Hall project has received support from former Liverpool FC manager Rafa Benitez and his wife Montse, who have a home in Wirral. The couples’ Montse Benitez Foundation supports local charities.

Raby Hall has been providing residential accommodation for people with autism and complex needs since 1977. The new building, being completed as part of the first phase, will provide lifelong facilities for up to eight people.

Further key features include under-floor heating and integrated window blinds. This will enable light and temperature to be adjusted with ease which is vitally important to residents who are sensitive to light and heat.

“This latest contract win demonstrates our ability to provide the complete electrical engineering solution,” said Mr Butler. “We are continuing to experience solid growth across the hospitality, commercial, industrial and retail sectors. This is largely due to our strong reputation for experience and expertise.”

PDW are an ISO 9001 Quality Assured company. The firm is an NICEIC registered contractor, with all work complying with the 17th Edition of the IET wiring regulations, and the latest Construction Design Management procedures.

WAS is an award-winning provider of autism services employing 800 people.
