Southport manufacturer Lattimer has appointed a new business development manager to drive growth across the UK’s nuclear, rail, defence, automotive and aerospace sectors.

The globally-renowned precision machinist has employed Carl Cleaver to spearhead a UK-wide cross-sector sales campaign. Lattimer is a specialist provider of quick turnaround, bespoke and complex CNC (Computer Numerical Control) parts. It uses a number of techniques including milling, turning, mill-turning, grinding and drilling.

Carl has more than 25 years’ experience in the manufacture and supply of Tier 1 and OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) products to the automotive and other sectors.

He said that Lattimer has a strong reputation as a world-leading precision machinist in the global glass manufacturing industry. However, he believes the North West business has huge potential to tap into many other sectors by promoting the benefits it can offer.

“The brief I have been given by Lattimer is a mouth-watering opportunity,” said Carl. “More than 80pc of the firm’s sales are currently within the niche bottled glass manufacturing sector. It exports to more than 50 countries each year.

“However, the level of skill and expertise the firm offers as an all-round precision machinist make it hugely attractive to other sectors. Lattimer’s manufacturing and design capability is incredibly diverse – it makes more than 20,000 component parts. It is essentially a one-stop-shop providing design, manufacture and troubleshooting for highly complex engineering issues, from individual products to sub and full assemblies.

“We are already beginning to have traction in the rail and aerospace sectors and progress is being made in the oil and gas, and nuclear sectors. This includes bespoke design and high volume applications such as spindles, shafts, castings and flat plate assemblies.

“In this respect I believe Lattimer is one of the region’s best kept secrets. My role will largely involve reversing this perception and heavily promoting the benefits of its service to new sectors. There is very little Lattimer cannot do in terms of precision engineering and we are keen to showcase this ability.”

Carl has worked with firms including Nissan and Jaguar Land Rover, as well as commercial vehicle businesses such as Catterpillar and JCB. He has international experience setting up sales offices in North America and has worked for US firms TRW Automotive and United Technologies Automotive.

“One of Lattimer’s greatest strengths is its standard of design and engineering,” said Carl. “It can create bespoke designs for individual products to complex assemblies. The crucial point is that it interrogates designs to highlight potential issues for clients. It uses this intelligence to make more efficient and cost effective products.

“By offering a complete design, manufacturing and installation solution it further reduces risk for clients. Lattimer offers a reliable and trustworthy service and can take complete responsibility starting with design and development. It removes the headache of project managing a series of complex processes and the risks this presents in terms of managing quality control, time and cost.”
